Udawalawe

Udawalawe National Park, situated on the boundary of Sri Lanka’s wet and dry zones, is one of the island’s premier destinations for wildlife viewing. Established in 1972, the park spans over 300 square kilometers and is best known for its large population of Asian elephants, which can be observed up close in their natural habitat. The open grasslands, scrub forests, and the Udawalawe Reservoir attract a variety of other wildlife, including water buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles, jackals, and over 200 species of birds. Jeep safaris at sunrise or sunset offer visitors unforgettable encounters with these animals against stunning backdrops of misty plains and shimmering waters. The nearby Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home provides refuge for orphaned calves before their release into the wild, underscoring the park’s conservation efforts.
