We booked a hotel in Unawatuna that was not what we expected. Chamal helped us find and drove us to another hotel and then helped us to get reimbursed. This is a private tour so you decide if want to sleep in and when you want to get going. He also knows where to eat and what to eat so you don't get sick. This is the second year in a row that we visited Sri Lanka, and we used the same company last year. We were assigned Sam’s brother, Chamal, as our driver. The first time we went to Sri Lanka we relied more on the expertise of this company to establish an itinerary and help us find hotels. This year we planned out most of the things on our own, but still felt like having a driver was important. We tend to be do-it-yourselfers and drive ourselves wherever we go all over the world, but Sri Lanka, where most of the road signs either are nonexistent or in Sinhalese, feels like an exception to us. My husband exclaimed so many times on this trip that he was grateful that he didn’t have to do the driving himself. We asked for Chamal again, a very lovely man with an excellent command of English. Naturally, when you spend so much time with a driver, you form a bond with that person. It still is a very alien concept to me to have a person essentially at our beck and call 24/7. I tried to be respectful of Chamal’s time. There were a few times when we were just hanging out on the beach and not going much of anywhere where I’m sure he was super bored. But we felt like Chamal was part of the overall experience, because he’s helped give us a deeper understanding of this country, which we love. I travelled for 2 weeks to celebrate my mum's 75th birthday with two of her friends, my wife and young kids (3 and 5). We were lucky to have the company of Chamal, our driver and guide. He was the perfect window through which to experience this beautiful country, with its friendly people and delicious foods. The trip was organized very efficiently by Don Rukshan and Don Samantha, with varied types of accommodation (some better than others) and a route suited to our group's varied ages and interest. The van served our purpose well and comfortable for long drives every other day. A kid seat and booster were provided for the kids. Chamal is a patient and experienced driver, we never had any concerns about our safety. Chamal went above and beyond to make our trip special. He was a calm presence when both our kids got badly hurt at the same time and had to be taken to hospital, he then organized the next doctor consultation for us. He was very resourceful when he found us a teacher to have our own private cultural dance class with drummers and dancers, that was one our highlights. He mediated with one of our hotels for a token refund when they didn't deliver on their promised amenities. He even insisted on buying my mum's cake on her birthday. He is extremely kind and approachable not just to us but in all his interactions with everyone we came across on our trip. On our second last day, Chamal had to leave us due to a family emergency but waited till we met our driver for our final trip to the airport Nisha (who also drove very well). We were instantly comfortable with Chamal when he met us at the airport and that comfort just increased with every day. Today, my kids remember him not as the driver but as part of our family on this trip.
