Koneswaram Temple crowns Swami Rock in Trincomalee and is venerated as “Dakshina Kailash,” one of Sri Lanka’s five ancient Shiva Iswarams. References go back more than two millennia, but its granite-and-bronze Dravidian complex reached glory in the medieval era with a famed thousand-pillared hall and gilded gopurams. Portuguese troops razed the shrine in 1622, casting many icons into the sea; artefacts recovered later were woven into the temple’s 20th-century reconstruction. Today, devotees climb the cliff for rituals such as the April Ther Thiruvila procession, while visitors come for its layered history and spectacular Indian-Ocean vistas.

Fort Frederick in Trincomalee is a historic coastal fort built by the Portuguese in 1624 using stones from the destroyed Koneswaram Temple. Perched on Swami Rock, it was later captured and rebuilt by the Dutch in 1665 and eventually taken over by the British in 1795. Today, the fort remains an active military site under the Sri Lankan Army but is open to visitors who can explore its colonial architecture, encounter resident deer, and enjoy panoramic views of Trincomalee’s natural harbor.

Nilaveli Beach, situated approximately 16 km north of Trincomalee on Sri Lanka’s northeastern coast, is celebrated for its pristine white sands and tranquil turquoise waters. This serene stretch offers a peaceful retreat, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and leisurely walks along the shore. Just offshore lies Pigeon Island National Park, a protected marine sanctuary renowned for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. Pigeon Island National Park, situated about 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli near Trincomalee, is one of Sri Lanka’s two marine national parks. Established in 2003, it encompasses two islands—Large and Small Pigeon Island—surrounded by vibrant coral reefs. The park is renowned for its rich marine biodiversity, including over 100 coral species and 300 types of reef fish, making it a haven for snorkelers and divers. Visitors can also spot blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and the endangered rock pigeons that give the island its name. Accessible by a short boat ride from Nilaveli, the park offers a unique opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s underwater beauty.

Marble Beach, located about 15 km south of Trincomalee along Kinniya Road, is a serene coastal gem renowned for its soft white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Nestled within a sheltered bay and fringed by lush greenery, the beach offers calm seas ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Managed by the Sri Lankan Air Force, the area maintains a peaceful ambiance, with facilities like the Marble Beach Air Force Resort providing accommodations and dining options. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including kayaking and paddleboarding, or simply relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings. An entrance fee is required, and it’s advisable to carry identification for access. The beach is best visited during the dry season from March to June for optimal weather conditions.
